What a calf drinks in her first weeks shapes longevity, how much milk she produces, and the fat content of her milk, years later.
A Trouw Nutrition study followed 86 Holstein Friesian calves through their first two lactations, comparing an elevated milk supply (5.4 Mcal ME in 8 litres of milk replacer per day) against a restricted diet(2.7 Mcal ME in 4 litres per day).
Calves on the higher plane of nutrition grew faster preweaning and carried that advantage well beyond weaning. By the second lactation, they were producing 1.8kg more fat-and-protein-corrected-milk per day, with 115g more milk fat and a 0.22 percentage point lift in fat content, all while using feed more efficiently.
Their first service conception rate more than trebled, and their risk of being culled before their third, fourth or fifth calving was halved.
